From Volunteer to Beach Assistant
Early Days at Big Green Groms
My journey with Big Green Adventures started when I was 12, volunteering as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. At first, I was nervous and shy, stepping into the lively atmosphere of Big Green Groms. This community surf club buzzed with energy every Thursday night. Despite my initial hesitation, the welcoming coaches and fellow volunteers quickly helped me feel at ease. They shared jokes and stories, making the environment friendly and inviting. I learned a lot, not just about surfing but about interacting with people, too. These early days were transformative, as they bolstered my confidence and introduced me to a world where the ocean became my playground. Looking back, I realise those moments set the stage for my future growth, both personally and professionally.
Building Confidence Through Volunteering
Volunteering at Big Green Adventures was a pivotal experience that built my confidence immensely. Initially, the idea of interacting with strangers was daunting. Yet, the supportive environment fostered by the coaches and fellow volunteers helped me step out of my comfort zone. I was thrown into the deep end, but this challenge was exactly what I needed. Each task, from setting up the surfboards to assisting with lessons, taught me how to engage with people and handle situations independently. The camaraderie and shared passion for the ocean among the team created a space where I felt valued and encouraged. This nurturing atmosphere was essential in developing my communication skills and self-assurance. These newfound abilities were crucial when I transitioned to a Beach Assistant role, where I continued to thrive and grow.
Transitioning to a Paid Beach Job
After two years of volunteering, I was ready to take on more responsibility and transition to a paid beach job. At 14, I became a Beach Assistant at Big Green Adventures, and this marked a significant step in my journey. The role required more than just a love for the ocean—it demanded professionalism and reliability. My tasks varied, from preparing equipment for the day's surf lessons to ensuring that each session ran smoothly. This position taught me valuable customer service skills, as I interacted with clients of all ages and abilities. The transition was seamless, thanks to the foundation I'd built during my volunteering days. I was no longer just helping out; I was an essential part of the team. This experience not only improved my confidence but also deepened my passion for the ocean and my commitment to providing a fun and safe environment for everyone.
Growing Into a Surf Instructor
Developing Customer Service Skills
Working as a Beach Assistant at Big Green Adventures was instrumental in honing my customer service skills. Daily interactions with diverse groups of people—families, tourists, and eager young surfers—taught me the importance of clear communication and a friendly demeanour. Each encounter provided an opportunity to make a positive impression and ensure our guests left with smiles. Whether it was guiding beginners through the basics or offering tips to more experienced surfers, I learned to adapt my approach to suit different needs. I also became adept at handling queries and resolving any issues that arose, always striving to deliver exceptional service. These experiences were not just about managing tasks; they were about forging connections and creating memorable experiences for our visitors. This skill set has been invaluable as I've grown into my role as a surf instructor, where building rapport and trust is key.
Teaching Surf Lessons with Enthusiasm
Teaching surf lessons at Big Green Adventures is not just a job—it's a passion that I live out every day. As I transitioned from assistant to instructor, I embraced the opportunity to share my love for surfing with others. Each lesson is a chance to introduce students to the thrill of riding waves, and I strive to make every session both educational and fun. My approach is rooted in enthusiasm; I believe that excitement is contagious and helps ease any apprehension newcomers might feel. Tailoring my teaching style to suit different learning paces ensures that everyone feels supported and confident in their abilities. Watching a student catch their first wave or improve their skills is incredibly rewarding. It reinforces why I love what I do and drives my commitment to fostering a safe and encouraging environment. These moments are what make teaching at Big Green so fulfilling.
